SACRAMENTO CAPITALS def. Kansas City Explorers 22-21
Sacramento’s Mardy Fish put the match away in the final set with a 5-3 victory over Nick Monroe. The Capitals were down a point after four sets, but Fish showed why he’s one of the best singles players in the world. The victory put the Capitals (2-1) into first place as the season approaches the end of the first week. Kansas City’s Chanel Simmonds was exceptional in her two sets, winning women’s singles over Asia Muhammad and women’s doubles alongside Tetiana Luzhanska. Both teams return to the court Friday with a crucial Western Conference battle.
WASHINGTON KASTLES def. New York Sportimes 20-18
The Sportimes fell short of spoiling the Kastles' home opener on Thursday night. Washington continued their impressive 19-match winning streak behind the play of Bobby Reynolds, who was able to shut the door on New York with a men’s singles victory over Jesse Witten in the final set, 5-4. The Sportimes' Martina Hingis brought New York within one, but it was not enough. A crucial turn in the match was men’s doubles, as Washington’s duo of Reynolds and Paes earned a decisive 5-0 victory over Witten and Robert Kendrick, which pushed the Kastles' lead to four. Washington has not lost a match since July 22, 2010. Before the match, the members of the 2011 WTT champion Kastles received their rings.
