On December 29, 2020, the ATP released its 2021 calendar for the first quarter of the season, ending with the Miami Open.

A week later, the WTA announced a more ambitious update for its set of tournaments, outlining a schedule of 20 additional weeks carrying through Wimbledon.

The updated WTA calendar, shared Tuesday, provides four successive weeks of 500-level tournaments following the Australian Open, including an event in Australia, Doha, Dubai and St. Petersburg. Longstanding U.S. fixtures in Miami (1000) and Charleston (500) occupy their usual places, beginning March 22 and April 5, respectively.

With the ITF previously confirming the Billie Jean King Cup 2020 Finals & Playoffs would take place in Budapest the week of April 12, it enabled renowned clay-court tournaments to maintain their spots. Stuttgart (500), Madrid (1000) and Rome (1000) will lead into a week of three 250-level tournaments, in Strasbourg, Rabat and a new event in Cologne, before players descend in Paris for Roland Garros.

Three weeks of WTA grass events, highlighted by the inaugural 500 in Berlin and a popular stop on tour, the 500 at Eastbourne, precede The Championships at SW19. Wimbledon was the lone Grand Slam event to cancel in 2020, aided by an insurance policy that covered pandemics.
