Jennifer Brady caps off stellar week in Lexington with first WTA title

American Jennifer Brady won her first WTA title on Sunday, defeating Jil Teichmann, 6-3, 6-4, at the Top Seed Open in Lexington, K.Y.

"Every American loves to play at home," Brady said during the trophy presentation. "Especially to win the title on home soil, is a great achievement for me and something I can be very happy about.

"The sky is the limit, so let's keep going."

Brady required just one break of serve in each set to lock up the victory, completing an impressive stretch of five matches. During her run, the 25-year-old relinquished her serve just three times en route to lifting the trophy without dropping a set. She wrapped proceedings up with the Swiss by crushing an inside-out forehand winner and letting out a resounding "come on!", symbolic of the stellar form she displayed throughout the week.

In defeating Teichmann, Brady avenged her 2019 defeat to the Swiss in Limoges. Her form is hardly a surprise, as before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the tennis tours to suspend tournament play for five months, Brady was 12-5 on the year. The first part of her 2020 season included wins over world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and Maria Sharapova in Brisbane, and a qualifying run to the Dubai semifinals thanks to three Top 20 victories.

As a result of her performance this week, Brady will crack the Top 40 and is expected to earn her first Grand Slam seeding in New York.
