Shang Juncheng won his first-round match at the Lexington Challenger on Tuesday—and a hoard of new fans for his kindness and quick thinking.

Facing American Stefan Dostanic, Shang spotted a struggling ball kid during his service game at 0-2, 40-40, in the second set.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

The 17-year-old put his arm around the child, then realized immediate help was needed.

“He’s going to faint.”

Shang dropped his racquet, taking matters into his own hands by picking up the boy and carrying him over to shade on the sidelines, where personnel arrived.

The left-hander went on to prevail, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, and followed it up with a straight-set win over No. 5 seed Mikhail Kukushkin. Shang, who started his season at No. 666 in the rankings, has climbed to No. 344 and could break the Top 250 with a title run this week.
