Look of the Week: Jelena Ostapenko all business in DK One at Brisbane International

The big-hitting Latvian kicked off the new year with some powerful tennis, and a major fashion statement.

In typical Jelena Ostapenko style, the powerful Latvian kicked off the year with some big tennis and a major fashion statement.

The 26-year-old turned heads at the Brisbane International with a new kit from her signature DK One, a Latvian sportswear company based in her native Riga. Ostapenko was seen sporting a lavender dress with a trendy sleeveless waistcoat-inspired top and a wrap skirt which also featured white and lavender side panels and matching undershorts when she rushed past Camila Giorgi 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round.

The look actually featured two colorways, as seen during her 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Karolina Pliskova, where she unveiled a turquoise and white side panel version of the lavender dress—both versions also feature her name “Alona Ostapenko” embroidered on the right chest. She completes the look with a classic pair of white Wilson Rush Pro shoes.

Ostapenko's DK One looked featured two colorways: one in all lavender and another featuring white and turquoise side panels.

Ostapenko opened up about her partnership with DK One during an interview with figure skater Natalia Zabiiako on Zabiiako & Kasatkina, the YouTube channel she shares with partner and WTA player Daria Kasatkina.

“I wanted to wear what I liked for a very long time. Some colors and stuff, but it’s not really easy,” Ostapenko revealed. “It’s really hard, actually. It’s a hard process and all this takes a lot of time. There are also not so many materials and fabrics in a country like Latvia. Sometimes it’s hard, but we try our best…

“I work with the girl who owns the project, and we try our best to make beautiful clothes.”

Ostapenko completes her Brisbane look with a white Adidas visor and wristbands, as well as all-white Wilson Rush 4.0 shoes.

Founded in 2017 by former tennis player Daniela K. in Riga, Ostapenko became involved with the company after making the switch from Adidas and was determined to work with the Latvian business despite the limitations.

“The story was that some of the tennis clothes didn’t really fit her, the sizes and shapes,” Ostapenko told wtatennis.com in 2022. “So she thought of doing the patterns and prints herself. She said it was really tough, but she decided to do it because she had so many issues with the clothes.

“It all looks very easy, but when you start going through all the steps—Oh, my God!”

Currently ranked No. 12 in singles, No. 3 seed Ostapenko is through to the quarterfinals in Brisbane, where No. 8 seed Victoria Azarenka awaits.
