One point—that's all she needed. But Elina Svitolina didn't win it, and in instead, lost her Wednesday quarterfinal Roland Garros contest to Simona Halep in tumbling fashion, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-0.

The world No. 6-ranked Svitolina raced ahead 6-3, 5-1, before Halep started digging in for the long haul. The irony is that in her previous match, Svitolina clawed back from a 2-5 deficit in the third set against Petra Martic.

Now she has her own version of that heartache to deal with.

"I'm still going to be five in the world next week, and I have my four titles," Svitolina said. She actually beat Halep for her fourth title of the season in Rome.

Though it hurts now, the 22-year-old's stellar season won't be marred by this loss—and anyway, her match point in the second-set tiebreaker was not lost by any mistake of her own:

Halep will play first-time French Open semifinalist Karolina Pliskova with the No. 1 ranking on the line.
