WATCH: Van Uytvanck leaps to WTA title with flying backhand

Most of the air on the WTA Tour this past week was taken up by the Premier 5 Wuhan Open, but there was another event going on at the same time, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Alison Van Uytvanck was the big winner.

The Belgian, seeded No. 3, got past Monica Niculescu, Kristyna Pliskova and, in the final, Sorana Cirstea to take her second title of 2019—she also won the crown in Budapest.

Throughout the week, Van Uytvanck splendidly transitioned from defensive positions to create crafty offensive winners. Perhaps the best example came in the deciding set of the championship match, when, in the vein of Nick Kyrgios and Daria Kasatkina, she leaped into the air for this scissor-kicking backhand blast:

Van Uytvanck broke Cirstea's serve that same game, and went on to take the title, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. The win marks the fourth tour-level tournament victory of Van Uytvanck's career.
