WIMBLEDON, England—Remember when I said that the excitement of Wimbledon appeared to be contained within the eponymous town? Turns out I was on to something. Take a look at the above photo of a Morrisons supermarket in SW19—does something look strange to you? The tennis ball on the "O" is a nice touch that's been added during The Championships, but that's not what I'm referring to.
It's worth noting that I didn't misspell "Morrisons" in the last paragraph—and, that's what the big, yellow letters spelled out a few weeks ago on its storefront. But while the nearby tournament is taking place, the store has actually been renamed Murrisons in a show of support for Andy Murray. I'm a bit late to this, so I'll let Alexander Smith, MSN UK content editor, explain:
UK supermarket Morrisons has done its bit for national tennis pride (and terrible, tenuous puns) by changing the name of its Wimbledon store to ‘Murrisons’, after British hopeful Andy Murray.
The grocery store is steps away from the Wimbledon tube stop—which, for those of you who don't know, is not the station you should alight at if you want to go the All England Club (that would be Southfields). A large television has been set up near the Murrisons entrance, along with chairs, so locals can sit down, grab a bite, and watch some tennis.
Somehow, I don't see the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store in Manhattan doing the same for Jack Sock come August.
